Patience is the key when it comes to photographing stars,- especially when its your first few times photographing them.
It was the night of Diwali, the Indian festival of lights, which I decided to celebrate further away from civilisation and home. .
The Himachali village of Nako, situated close to Indo-China border was my home for the night. I was determined to try my hands on astrophotography for the first time. Temperatures outdoor were evidently below -5 degrees,& hands weren’t exactly cooperating in the cold. When I realised I won’t be able to stay outdoors for long, & that it might be a bad idea-
I quickly took a couple of test shots to adjust the aperture & frame, and put my camera on a single long exposure shot for as long as I could bear staying outside. .
Clueless as to how long could be ‘long enough’ to capture star movement, I stayed there, waiting. Most people would argue that clicking multiple shots & combining them in post would be the better way out— easier to edit, & to eliminate unwanted objects & sources of light, & I would agree. But the last trigger of the night had been pulled, & the cold started to get more intense. There was no going back.
I wasn’t sure how long I’d be able to be outside, & I admit- it was a little scary. But curiosity held me tight. So after 45mins or so, I decided it was it.
So I took the camera down, & went back to the homestay, while camera was still in ‘processing mode’ (most cameras process pictures as long as the shutter speed). Honestly, I was too scared to stay awake to see the end result.
So I put my camera aside to get some sleep, dreaming about each time I could’ve possibly, completely ruined the shot by turning on my head torch once every while, but in the wrong direction.
When I woke up next morning to this picture on my camera display, my joy knew no limits.
