Words matter, tones matter, and intent matters. What we say and how we say it is powerful for us and others. What you say can build someone up, lead them to the Lord, and show love, but words you speak can also tear someone down, steer them in the wrong direction, or teach them hate. Whichever way you choose impacts not only the person you are speaking to or about but you. Being a child of God and not loving people does not work. Jesus told us the most important commandments were to love God and love others.
There are people out there who speak death and darkness. They would rather talk about someone else than about anything else, it makes them feel better about themselves. Some use their words to insult others, they point out their flaws to put others down and make them feel bad. Some people use words that do not honor God but then speak of being a Christian which can lead people away from the Lord and not towards Him. These people choose to use their words to hurt and destroy others and that brings death to them and others.
Then there are those people who speak in love and this speaks life. They share the love of the Lord with others and their words and actions match that. They build people up and offer correction in a kind way and they encourage others to be their best. They pray with people and offer Biblical guidance. Those people use their words with love and show others what love should be.
I have been on the receiving end of both types of words in the past few days. Even when you know you are doing the right thing and following God’s way words can hurt, especially when they come from someone you thought highly of. How we use our words is our choice. How will you use your words today?
